World GIS Day is an event that celebrates the achievements in the technological world of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and sensitize people about the importance of Geospatial Science and Earth Observation Technology. ESRI the global giant of spatial tools calls it the “Science of Where”. The GIS day is globally celebrated annually on the third week of November and bring together GIS community, students and professionals to showcase the application of the spatial technology in solving global problems.

Kenyatta University has since 2013 celebrated GIS Day leading to significant exposure of her spatial community. The university was the first in Eastern Africa to be awarded Esri 100 Africa University’s Site license and has a reference account that runs to date. The University was honored with the Esri Special Achievement in GIS Award (SAG Award – 2015) and a number of her students have made significant impression in industry from the spatial applications for problem solving.

This year, Kenyatta University community of geospatial knowledge users and researchers invites you to join us in the Virtual event on 17th November 2021 from 9:00 am– 12:30 pm as we mark the annual World GIS Day Celebrations.  The theme of this year’s KU-GIS Day is “GIS in Research and Tourism Management”.

Featuring will be Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre (GTRCMC) Eastern Africa Satellite node, International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), IGAD/ICPAC and Joint Research Commission for European Union (JRC-EU) among others. Some of the key topics that will be covered during the event includes; demonstration of impact tool box for forest monitoring, mapping and managing tourism resources in the country, the geographical dilemma surrounding Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes, and mapping women livelihood in Tharaka Nithi County among others.
