ASC 302:SOCIAL STRUCTURE OF AFRICAN SOCIETIES
The nature of the African social structure during the traditional, colonial and post-colonial periods with special reference to East Africa. Traditional social, economic, political and cultural organizations. Comparative analysis of the kinship factors of African societies. The impact of colonization and post-colonial factors.
ASC 303:SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY
Definition and scope of social psychology. Social psychology and other disciplines. Theoretical perspectives, theories of personality development. Socialization; reference groups taking the role of the other definition of the situation, self-fulfillment prophecies, self-defense mechanisms, symbolic environments and language. Perception, motivation, self-control, social control, structure of social behaviour, attitude change, dynamics of face-to-face interaction and awareness levels.
ASC 304:SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY II
Nature and types of theories in social science. Logic and techniques of constructing social theories in research design and practice, interpretation of data with applied theory, grounded theory, contemporary theories, application and relevance of social theories to developing countries.
ASC 305:CRIMINOLOGY AND DEVIANT BEHAVIOUR
Definition of crime and deviance. Theories of crime and deviance. Nature and types of crimes and deviance; sexual, white collar and occupational crimes against the person and crimes against the State. Deviant behaviour and juvenile delinquency. Victims of crime, societies reaction to crime and deviance: types of punishment, methods of crime control and prevention, formal agencies of control and informal agencies of control. Cross-cultural comparisons of crime situations in industrialised and less industrialised countries.
ASC 306: DEMOGRAPHY AND POPULATION STUDIES
Concepts, theories and methods in demography. Trends in world population growth with emphasis on Africa. Sources and evaluation of demographic data, composition and distribution of population. Major demographic components: mortality, fertility and migration. The labour force, population growth and its relation to economic development, population policies, management and gender issues. Population control and culture, population projection techniques.
ASC 307:MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY
Concepts and theories, theoretical perspective on health and illness, organization of medical practice, health institutions, the profession of medicine, Doctor patient relationships, types of medical systems in various cultures and societies, the sick and delivery of health care, identification, distribution and treatment of illnesses and diseases, social epidemiology; health attitudes and behaviour, social attitudes and behaviour, social attitudes to illnesses, socialization of health practitioners and training, provision of health facilities in urban and rural areas. Health and medical care in developing countries, medicalization of health.

Theoretical approaches to social stratification, application of class theories in Africa. Ethnicity and gender. Effects of ethnicity on social and economic development. Ethnicity and contested borders, social differentiation and mobility.
